TECHNICAL TIP

When comparing speaker wattage ratings, be aware that specifications are often “inflated” to impress the non-technical! A speaker quoted as having a power handling of 400 watts PEAK is usually equal to one rated at 200 watts PROGRAMME which is likely to have a “TRUE” rating of just 100 watts RMS. Beware of any speaker wattage shown without stating how it is rated!

TECHNICAL TIP

It is a common misconception that doubling the amplifier wattage will double the sound output - NOT SO. As an example, you will need 100 watts of amplification to be perceived as roughly twice as loud as 10 watts! Loudness will also depend on the efficiency and impedance of the speakers, as well as how much signal is going INTO the amplifier.
